Language!

Meaningful cross-cultural engagement done properly in Australian Western Desert contexts, is really, really intricate, but essential. You’ll waste a lot of time, money, and good intentions – and maybe find yourself eagerly pushing everyone up the wrong creek – without it.

Strong ethical and methodological considerations and experience guide how I work. I aim to do what’s right by indigenous stakeholders first and foremost and by all funders and partners in the same stroke. This is important to me.

Dukepa

After spending 5 years learning and working alongside many inspiring teachers, friends and colleagues, who all cherish language, culture and any opportunities for reciprocal teaching and learning, I’m moving South (in search of more challenges).

It’d be a shame to leave so many friends behind and not be available where I can be of value.

If you don’t know me, and reckon a poster or a t-shirt translation will be a great cross-cultural engagement device and tick that box… get in touch, but be warned I’ll interrogate your cross-cultural engagement process first to make sure I be used as efficiently as possible.

If you reckon you’re keen to:

  • Apply a holistic linguistic lens to your cross-cultural engagement, communication and activity planning
  • Make use of the linguistic lens to critically examine and be certain what you’re seeking to do aligns with the community’s aspirations
  • Creatively work in the cross-cultural and cross-linguistic space to be a boon rather than a bain to people’s strength, language, culture, and connections

– well bloody oath! Let’s all get together and do this ‘right-way’!

A key yet so often underestimated part of the process... | "Without language, one cannot talk to people and understand them; one cannot share their hopes and aspirations, grasp their history, appreciate their poetry or savour their songs" - Nelson Mandela |
